Urology Department

Urology is the surgical specialty that deals with disorders or diseases of the male genito-urinary tract and female urinary tract, although only some people presenting with urological problems need surgery.

Problems commonly treated by urologists include benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, voiding dysfunction, kidney stones, kidney cancer, erectile dysfunction, and scrotal swellings.

Mr Palmer was appointed to Medway Health Authority as a Consultant Urologist in September 1986. He founded the department of Urology in Medway and has founded urodynamics, endo-urology and in his early years popularised cystectomy. He has always done out-reach clinics, initially at Sheppey General Hospital and for many years at Sittingbourne. The Sittingbourne clinic is now run in his name by a Staff Grade.

With the expanded number of consultant sub-specialisation became possible and Mr Palmer was offered implantation (one of two consultants) by the diseased orientated group for Kent. In addition to sphincters and penile implants he also has special interests in endo-urology (Percuntaneous Nephrolithotomy, Flexible Ureteroscopy etc).

He continues to undertake some open surgery, in particular bladder augmentation. He offers the full range of office urology and endoscopic resection of prostate and bladder tumour.

He is the member of Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings for Cancer Care at Medway Maritime Hospital.

In the private sector he has visit privileges at the Alexandra Hospital and has recently relinquished chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, a post that he held for six years.
